Great bridge to resources in the community for foster care youth. However, as a parent, it is not the safest place to allow your child or foster child to go to alone. The program has serious restrictions placed on their staff that does not permit them to come the physical rescue of young people in fights especially if someone is jumped. Staff is only allowed to verbally tell another kid to stop punching or kicking another kid. I have personally witnessed a pretty young girl who was there for an orientation get stomped by a young lady in the program. The new orientee left that day with bruises to her face and it is not confirmed that the assailant received any charges. Within a couple of months, she was back at the program as if nothing happened. As a person with 20+ years in social services including group homes and detention facilities and 10+ years in the US ARMY, I would have lost my job if I had physically intervened. At least at my new employer, I have and am allowed to physically intervene if two or more young people are engaged in an altercation. If you would like to enroll your child or loved one in this program, ask many questions about their safety procedures.

Hello - please give us a call to discuss with a staff member - thanks!
Hi Kayla! You can learn more about our Achieving Independence Center at https://www.valleyyouthhouse.org/programs/life-skills-development/achieving-independence-center-aic/ For more information on how to get involved, please call our AIC office at (215) 574-9194. Thank you!
You do not currently have to be in DHS care to receive AIC services. You just need to have had a history of being in DHS dependent care after the age of 14. We now serve youth up until their 23rd birthday. If you believe you are still eligible you can contact the center to reactivate at 215-574-9194. For general housing information we advise to contact the Office of Homeless Services in Philadelphia for a full list of housing related services.
Typically 18-21 or 18-24 depending on the program
Hi Leea- The AIC focuses on foster care youth/youth in dependent care and recently released foster care youth/youth in dependent care. Please call (215) 574-9194 to discuss with staff. Thanks!
