I stayed at COC 2 years ago for about 4 days and still have recurring nightmares from being here. I voluntarily signed myself in and was then told they would Baker Act me if I tried to leave. They did not provide me a pillow and when asked they said they "ran out"....for the entire 4 days I was there. Woke me up in the middle of the night to draw blood, and proceeded to fail numerous times because I was too dehydrated and refused to give me water. Second time they tried to get blood, they used the same needle to poke my arm and hand. By the time they actually got blood, I was covered in dark black, blue, and red bruises which concerned other patients. Staff just rolled their eyes. Was supposed to be released on day 3 and was kept an extra day and was provided no reason. We went outside 1 day and it was for 20 mins. I could go on but that would turn this into a book. Long story short, DO NOT take your loved ones here. They do not care, the "caretakers" have no experience, and they have no empathy for anyone who is admitted.

Depends if you get admitted voluntarily or you are Baker Acted. In the case of the latter, usually a minimum of 3 days.

Some actually do help people, with their journey to recovery.

How long do they keep you if you voluntarily admit yourself?

William Medeiros | Oct 3, 2020
Glenn Larsen | Oct 3, 2020

William, I am not a spokesperson for the circles of care, but I can tell you to expect to be on premise for at least one week if your insurance allows. You may not want to show up without a heads up because they may not have a bed available for you.
