I recently moved to North Carolina from Las Vegas, NV because painting opportunities outside of the hotel/casino and construction industries in the state have recently severely nosedived, and I have family support here. On August 24th I'd twice gotten a call from the receptionist at JP Weaver Inc. (very nice lady, by the way) asking me to come and fill out an application, that they were interested based on my resume and experience. That afternoon, about 430pm, I arrived at there office to apply. Again, the receptionist was very nice and professional. Behind her was a stocky bald fellow talking to a young woman with dark hair. As I was talking with the receptionist, I noticed that the both of them had stopped their conversation and were staring intently at me; so I said 'hi' (and got no response from either) and finished talking with the receptionist. After I gave the application to the receptionist she took it to give to someone in the back office (hiring manager, I presume) so they could review it and talk with me. She seemed really enthusiastic and I thought my chances of getting hired (or at least and interview) were extremely good. She came back after about 5 minutes and flatly said 'they have your resume and if they're interested they'll give you a call." I admit it caught me off guard, but I politely said thank you and left. Then it hit me - everything was fine and they were very interested UNTIL THEY ACTUALLY SAW ME. That may explain why the man and woman behind the receptionist interrupted their conversation to stare at me as though I had 4 heads. I had to remind myself I'm in North Carolina now, not nearly as progressive or diverse as Las Vegas, and that some people feel the need to maintain a certain aesthetic, or have preconceived, deep-rooted notions of others that they can't quite overcome, regardless of how qualified that person may be.
