Maria is an amazing person and professional within our community. As professionals within the community working closely with new families having someone with integrity and compassion to refer families we work with to is invaluable. Thank you Maria!

Jacksonville is so fortunate to have a therapist like Maria in town. She is knowledgeable, professional, and down-to-earth. Just by talking with Maria, you will feel welcomed and most importantly, you will know that your voice is truly being heard. Maria loves what she does and it shows. Highly recommended!!

Maria is a wonderful counselor. She is immensely empathetic and understanding with my struggles. She is able to take all the knowledge she's gained from her studies and work experience and fully utilize them to help a person break through their obstacles. After meeting with her you will see she truly cares. I highly recommend her. If you haven't called her yet, you need to do so. She's one of the best counselors I've seen and she also offers online-counseling so you can get a session with her no matter where you are in the state!

Questions & Answers

What's the difference between a counselor and a therapist?

In my opinion, there is not a difference when it comes to the mental health field. Often, I use the terms interchangeably as do most other therapists I know. However, within the mental health field, a therapist refers to someone who has a master's degree and is licensed to treat mental health issues. In general, the term therapists could refer to massage, occupational, or physical so it's important to make the distinction of what type of therapist the person is.

Do you take insurance?

I do not take insurance. I am happy to provide you with a receipt, so that you can file for reimbursement from your insurance company if desired. Some insurance companies reimburse at a higher percentage than others. If this is an area of concern, I strongly suggest you contact your insurance company prior to making an appointment.

How long do I need to come to counseling?

My goal is to help you reach your goal(s) and to feel better about whatever it is that originally brought you through my door. With that being said, consistently is most important in creating change. Most often, I see people weekly for 3-6 months. However, some people really enjoy counseling and its benefits, so they choose to have periodic sessions every month or two ongoing.

How often do we meet?

We meet weekly at first so that I am able to thoroughly assess everything that's going on. We also will determine what you want to get out of counseling (1 or more goals) and then create a plan to meet those goals.

How do I know if I need counseling?

In my opinion, everyone can benefit from counseling at one time or another. If you find yourself at a place in your life where you are struggling for one reason or another, maybe with more sadness or worry than usual, it would likely be beneficial to talk to a counselor. You could talk to a friend or family member, but counselors/therapists are trained to help you deal with a variety of issues. In addition, we are unbiased and nonjudgemental.
