The Smithsonian National Zoo is free entry, like all the Smithsonian Museums! You might pay for certain exhibits but I enjoyed a totally free day and saw lots of animals. You do have to pay to park in their lots, but you can Metro or park elsewhere.

Yes the zoo has 5 parking lots (A, B, C, D, and E). They are all a $25 flat fee to park. There is also some street parking near by, but it is often full.
