Our son is now 1. I waited a long time to write this review because in the heat of the moment things seem worse than they actually are and emotions are high, etc. I was supposed to give birth at home with a midwife but labor stalled and she got worried so she recommended we go to the hospital. She called ahead of time and sent over my info. We lived on Dellwood Ave at the time (5 minute drive). A man (possibly security) met my husband and I at the door and quickly got a wheel chair once he realized what was going on. Admitted no problem. Got upstairs. The women in the room insisted that I lay down on the bed. They were agressive and disrespectful (not all of them.) How is this possible when in am in active labour?! I cannot just still peacefully and quietly. I tried to explain this (between contractions) to no avail. They could care less. Their focus was trying to force an epidural on me, which was not safe since I couldn’t even sit still. And how many centimeters was I at the time, was it even appropriate? Things got worse when the doctor came in and yelled at me. She then cut my son’s umbilical cord with my husband, his father, standing right there!! After I asked her not to! Another lady then stuck me in the leg! I turned and asked what it was she rudely explained that it was something so that I don’t have blood clots. The bright spot was a Jamaican nurse whose name escapes me but she treated us like human beings. She was kind and compassionate to both of us in her tone. No one else even acknowledged my husband’s presence. Six weeks later I call and ask to speak to the nurse manager, and I explained everything to her. She said she’ll investigate and call back. Well she calls back and tells me basically it’s my word against the doctor’s (Dr. deSalvo). Well, she wins, of course. Honestly, I don’t know the hearts of all involved to say WHY we were treated the way that we were, only the Lord knows that. May He have mercy on them. And on me, if I am exaggerating or lying in any way.

Had a great birthing experience here. The staff were very supportive; I love the nurses! They also have lactation specialist on hand that assist your entire visit. For black moms that fear child birth and being ignored, that was not my experience here.
