Peace Lutheran Church in Gahanna had been the host yesterday [12-8-2019] for the Fourth Annual Interfaith Prayer Gathering and Potluck, co-sponsored by Interfaith Association of Central Ohio [IACO] and Ohio Interfaith Power and Light [which is sometimes described as "A Religious Response to Climate Change"]. The theme for this year's Interfaith Prayer Gathering and Potluck had been "Caring for the Earth, Our Shared Home, With our Heads, Hearts, and Hands." Approximately 100 of us gathered in the sanctuary for spoken messages and music focusing on our collective need to care for the earth; we then gathered in Fellowship Hall for an interfaith potluck dinner. Before I visit any church, I typically do some research in advance to learn if that church fully welcomes LGBTQ people. Since Peace Lutheran Church is an ELCA Lutheran church, I called my "LGBT ally" Lutheran friend in Reynoldsburg to ask about that church. She told me some of the history of that church and then assured me that Peace Lutheran Church is "RIC" ["Reconciling in Christ"], the term used by those Lutheran churches and other Lutheran entities to indicate that they fully welcome LGBTQ people]. One of the people at my table during the potluck is a member of Peace Lutheran Church. This woman is a retired speech therapist and has a daughter with multiple disabilities. We spoke at length about Peace Lutheran Church and its welcome of people with disabilities. It had been great to be able to once again spend time with my many interfaith friends; Peace Lutheran Church provided a welcoming space for this interfaith event that I plan to attend each year.
