Will I need a bone graft after a wisdom tooth extraction?

Rebecca Carter | Sep 27, 2021
Temecula Center for Wisdom Teeth & Dental Implants | Sep 27, 2021

The answer is NO. Bone grafting is not needed at all during or after wisdom tooth extraction. There is one small exception to this rule, but other than that, bone grafting is not needed for teenagers and young adults and can actually delay the healing process and increase risk of infection after wisdom tooth extraction. Not mentioning the fact, that this will increase your copay for wisdom teeth removal significantly. Please read more about risk of bone grafting during wisdom tooth extraction in Dr. Tsvetov's blog https://www.temeculafacialoralsurgery.com/procedures/wisdom-teeth/wisdom-teeth-faq/. We will be glad to address any questions you might have regarding wisdom teeth extraction. What should I do before my wisdom tooth surgery? How do I prepare for it?

Rebecca Carter | Sep 27, 2021
Temecula Center for Wisdom Teeth & Dental Implants | Sep 27, 2021

If you choose to proceed with wisdom teeth extractions under local anesthetics, no specific preparation is needed. You can eat and drink prior your wisdom tooth removal surgery as you usually do. If you choose to remove your wisdom teeth under IV sedation or general anesthesia, please do not eat or drink 8 hours prior the surgery. If you smoke, you will need to stop min 12 hours prior the procedure. You will need a parent or your loved one who will wait in our office for the duration of procedure and will bring you home after your wisdom tooth removal. Regardless of the anesthesia type you choose, after your wisdom tooth removal procedure, you will be on a soft diet for a few days. Please make sure you have enough soft food such as yogurt, ice cream, mash potatoes, soups, etc. at home. Please schedule your free wisdom tooth removal consultation 951-302-9100 and we will be happy to answer all your questions.
