I worked here for Lockheed Martin for many years on the Space Shuttle Program. We designed, engineered, and built the External Tanks here - it was an amazing place to work, with some of the best people I’ve ever met. Astronauts used to visit regularly, and toward the end of the Shuttle program the crews would visit after they returned and give us presentations on their missions. The factory is just an amazing place - it was also used to build the Saturn V boosters (the biggest part of the moon rocket) and Werner von Braun himself has walked the halls of these buildings. Side note: I worked (mostly) in Bldg 101, which is in front of the factory and is facing Old Gentilly Rd. My window looked out at one of the two remaining smokestacks; those are from the old Antoine Michoud plantation. There is an exhibit in Bldg 102 near one of the crossovers (at least there was until 2011) that gives the history of Michoud, and even has an old photo from 1911 that shows a horse and buggy traveling along Old Gentilly in front of the old plantation, and the smokestacks are in view. Historic, remarkable place, used by the U.S. government since the 1940s. Edit Jan 2022: Apparently Bldg 350 (to the southwest of the factory building 103) which housed offices for both Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin and USDA employees - as well as NASA and other agency offices - has been demolished due to a 2016 tornado strike and heavy damage and the spread of asbestos. I was sorry to learn about that, it was where I started my career. As of 1/22 is it still in the satellite photo.
