Joseph Otis 1768-1854 Born in Yantic CT in July 1768, Joseph Otis worked as a young man in the mercantile service at the Norwich Landing. At age 21 he left Norwich and started his own business in Charleston, South Carolina. He relocated to New York City in 1796 where he was a business in the export-import business. He lived and worked in NYC for forty years. He returned to Norwich in 1838 where he and his wife Nancy Huntington Otis resided on Broadway. He purchased the land at the corner of Union and Church Streets with the intention of building a public library on the site. His plans came to fruition and building of the library was completed in 1849 and opened to the public in the spring of 1850. Joseph Otis died four years later.
