usually durig the week courses are much more wide-open than on weekends and holidays (or Friday afternoons). But holding people up is a different story. That's a simple question of pace and time to play the hole. You might get people who want to play right up behind you and feel that your pace is too low...if you feel pressed, let them pass through. Very simple. If they hit on you then report them in the clubhouse. If they can't be polite and wait for you to play and then ask to play through, or wait until you offer to let them play through, and they hit on you, report them as soon as you get the chance. That's bad golf etiquette no matter how you slice it. On the other hand it's your responsibility to keep an eye behind you and not go off looking for balls in the waste and taking multiple shots from the same lie and so on, and hold up play. And of course you can play single if the course is not too busy and you don't hold up play. It happens all the time..
