We were extremely grateful for the services of the Slutsky Elder Law team. We heard about the practice in a presentation at Penn Med that Rob delivered via Zoom. The presentation was designed for patients and caregivers who were being impacted by incurable neurodegenerative diseases. Rob offered his time and expertise to educate us about the need to deal with Power of Attorney, wills, and the protection of assets as we all maneuvered through the ups and downs of the diseases we were confronting. We contacted Rob and he spoke to us about the issues we needed to consider as we tackled the disease that had suddenly impacted our entire family. He was very patient, extremely thorough, and most compassionate about what we were about to face and our need to be able to deal with the pitfalls. He did not pressure us, in fact , he was most careful not to impose any strong suggestions about what we should do. We heard from the medical team at Penn Med that Rob was highly trustworthy and recommended. We asked him to represent us and have absolutely no regrets, in fact, we are grateful. Rob and his team have patiently guided us through the corridors of “legaleeze” that are essential to getting home health care, great medical coverage, protection of assets, establishing wills and Powers of Attorney, these are all vital for us as my wife struggles through an incurable disease that is robbing her of her ability to move, speak, and sometimes think unemotionally. Rob and his team provided the patience and understanding we needed as we were ignorant of the processes required to do all that we needed to undertake. He or a member of his team responded almost immediately when we posed a question, even on weekends or early evenings, the professionalism that the practice exhibited was remarkable and most welcome. My family and I have nothing but praise for Rob and his team who worked with us, Sheila Buek, and Heather Scurti, they are as compassionate and patient as Rob has been. Sheila provided constant support as she quelled my fears about the process and outcome. Heather has done a remarkable Job guiding us in obtaining home care. Rob knows his stuff and has the personal touch as he advises and helps clients through the most difficult times in their lives. Dr. Steve Wysowski caregiver for wife Anne

You know you are entering a door that you really don’t want to enter but you have no other choice. The time has come for you to make difficult decisions for your parents. Not one is pleasant. Not one triggers an enjoyable conversation. It is overwhelming. A friend who has spent a career in the field of health care pointed us to Slutsky Elder Care. Rob and his team were able to take the vast majority of the administrative hassle and the reams of required paperwork and make it manageable and digestible. I truly do not know how anyone is able to navigate the requirements surrounding getting Medicaid approval on their own. Rob and his team handled every twist and turn. The team responds quickly. The team is candid. The team is understanding. The team is thoughtful . The team knows it’s stuff and is professional in every way. It is extremely difficult to find an outfit in any industry or capacity that you can trust . Rob and his team earned our trust !

It's always a pleasure to work with Slutsky Elder Law. As an elder care professional myself, I appreciate their firm's attentiveness and professionalism towards our mutual clients. Most recently, my client was very impressed with Rob's ability to quickly identify the major issues surrounding her mother's move to assisted living. She was so appreciative that he pointed out her mother is quite capable of making her own decisions, and as such must also live with the consequences. It seems like having a third party make this declaration clarified some muddied areas. Thanks to Rob and his team, for the first time my client experienced powerful advocacy for her position in a meaningful way. She felt lighter and more hopeful following her time with him. Thanks for the opportunity to collaborate. Keep up the great work!

Many attorneys/financial advisors would recommend starting an Estate Plan the moment you become a legal adult, and updating it every three to five years after that. While the planning will change as you age, marry, have children and accumulate assets, the need to have a plan in place does not.

What do Elder Law Attorneys do?

An elder law attorney is an estate planning attorney with additional skills and knowledge. While estate planning attorneys will often prepare wills, trusts and powers of attorneys and discuss taxation (income and inheritance taxation), an elder law attorney discusses those in a larger context. An elder law attorney helps families prepare for the need for long term care, what possible options the family will have, where the care will be provided and how to pay for the care. An elder law attorney uses not only basic estate planning skills but coordinates those important considerations with asset protection, use of Medicaid funds to pay for care and the need to ensure the safe management of a cognitively impaired person (Dementia or Alzheimer's). In addition most elder law attorneys help families plan for the needs of Special Needs children by assisting the family in obtaining Medicaid benefits and ensuring funds left to a disabled child is managed responsibly for the child’s benefit.

What happens if you die without a will?

If you die without a will assets in your name alone will pass to your legal heirs in accordance with the intestacy law in your state. In essence the state makes a will for you, including the choice of who will carry out the distribution of your assets. Failure to execute a will leaves the important decision of who will receive your property and who will ensure it gets there up to state law. For most people it is in your best interest to have a properly drafted will.
