Dr. Whall gave our cat Pumpkin a steroid shot when he was 7 or 8 years old and it pushed him to become diabetic. Pumpkin died in 2017 at age 12 after we struggled to manage his diabetes for a number of years. Although we are only about 5 minutes away we decided that after Pumpkin died we would find a new veterinary practice.

I brought my dog, Mr. Snuggles, to Fairland Animal Hospital in early June of 2022. Another vet, Beltsville Veterinary Hospital, previously diagnosed Mr. Snuggles with a tick-borne disease called Ehrlichia. Beltsville Veterinary Hospital informed me he needed to start a regimen of Doxycycline immediately, but it would take 3 days to arrive. They risked my pet's health as I later found they could have written a script to be obtained immediately elsewhere. They never called me when it came in. I had to call them. One reason for contacting Fairland Animal Hospital was I needed a certain tick medication I could only get by prescription. I had explained the previous experience I had with Beltsville Veterinary hospital in painstaking detail. The ticks were bad, and my dog already had Ehrlichia. The meds available at stores like Petco failed to impress me from past trials. I didn’t want to give Mr. Snuggles any of those that failed to work prior as I couldn’t give him a dose of one med quickly followed by another. I decided to use Chewy for the tick meds. I didn't trust vets anymore to expeditiously get my pet the vital meds he needed. I asked Fairland to email the script. They said they could not, and I’d have to drive there to get it wasting precious gas and time. I sent the script to Chewy, but they needed to communicate with Fairland. However, Fairland refused to open a line of communication. Apparently, vets don’t like operations like Chewy as they take money out of their pockets. Between the time I received the script from Fairland, and the time I received the meds from Chewy, I’d removed 15 very deeply imbedded nymph ticks. They were very hard to see because of their size and my dog’s black coat. It was extremely alarming. Nymph ticks are the most dangerous carriers of Lyme Disease, and other tick-borne diseases! By delaying the arrival of the meds Mr. Snuggles could have contracted another tick-borne disease which was precisely what I was trying to prevent!!!!! If they simply spoke to Chewy, I could have had the meds in 1 or 2 days. Now, here’s a little on the issue with the hygromas I also brought Mr. Snuggles in for. I check my dog over every day for ticks, etc. That’s why I was surprised to see weeping wounds appear on each limb. FYI, hygromas look like fatty, pus-filled tumors. Fairland Animal Hospital prescribed the anti-biotic Cefpodoxime and Vetprophen for inflammation. What the vet failed to explain was hygroma 101. One important thing I needed to know that was never mentioned is that I should avoid allowing Mr. Snuggles to lay on hard surfaces. I already knew this, but if they’re not mentioning it to me, they’re probably not mentioning it to other pet owners who own pets with hygromas. This knowledge is essential to even have a remote chance of healing your pet. Something else they failed to mention is that I must avoid giving dairy to my dog as it would make the Cefpodoxime inactive and ineffective. I had been giving him plain yogurt with his food the entire time!!!!! They didn’t even inform me about products that protect the front ankles and rear hocks. I found products that will prove very helpful, but through my own research. I mentioned to them that hairs keep coming out of the wounds, and I was afraid the wound could heal over them, exasperating the problem which it did. They didn’t address that at all. Aren’t they supposed to be the pros? They are inept, greedy and they lack compassion. One might even infer that their ineptitude is fine with them because we’ll have to keep bringing our pets in for the same issue. I do not recommend them. If you love your pets steer clear!!!!! UPDATE: Mr. Snuggles wellness exam results show he’s tested positive for another tick-borne disease called Anaplasma Phagocytophilum!!!!! The timeline tells me he likely caught it during the period the tick medicine was being delayed by Fairland and I’d removed 15 of the smallest, most deeply imbedded ticks I’d ever had the displeasure of dealing with. THIS IS PRECISELY WHAT I WAS TRYING TO PREVENT!!!!!!

Currently, we are not allowing clients to enter the building because of the restrictions of COVID-19. We are currently still doing curbside service. You will call once you arrive, we will get the make & color of your vehicle and the cell number you are calling us from. A technician will come out to your vehicle to acquire your pet and bring in for the examination while you remain onsite in your vehicle. The doctor will call you at the cell # you provided to go over their exam findings, recommendations, and any questions you may have. We will then take a credit card payment over the phone and the technician will return your pet to your vehicle. We do ask that all clients wear a mask during the interaction with the technician.

Unfortunately, we currently do not have a doctor on staff that does pocket pets. You may want to try Dr. Weist at Patuxent Valley Animal Hospital as they have seen them in the past. Their phone number is: 301-490-1030. We wish you all the best!
