Bob is amazing and very informative. I had fun kayaking on Ontonagon River. Got to see some snapping and eastern painted turtles (July 18, 2021).

This place is so great. My husband and I rented a canoe for the day. They were able to drop off the canoe at the lake we wanted to paddle and pick it up at the end of the day. So kind to work with and very reasonably priced. Will absolutely be back. Beautiful lakes and forest to explore

The rates are reasonable here, and they have some good set routes they will drop you off and pick you up on for kayaking. We did the one that is labeled #3 on their website at the time of this writing. The rapids were quite easy but still …

Yes they have rentals for skis. And much more. Bob's a great person. Tell him Harold Wilcox said so.

We are thinking of booking a cabin in your area the last weekend in July. Are the black flies real pesty around that time? How about when Kayaking the river? Thanks, George

Hi George. We live next to the Sylvania Wilderness. No "absolutes" re biting bugs in the UP, but here goes: Black flies are usually gone by July - they are mostly a late-May to mid-June thing. As for other bugs, mosquitoes are worse in wet conditions and better in dry conditions. Proximity of swamps to your cabin will also influence your time there. July is mostly known for deer flies. They can be a real pest during the day along roadways and streams adjacent to woods. They like to target the back of your head, so we like lightweight hooded sweatshirts layered over a light T-shirt. Sun hats with the flap over the back of the neck is another option. Stay with light natural colors or white, avoiding dark blue and black in particular. Avoid scented soaps and shampoos. Sometimes deer flies are on the decline by late July. With some planning, bugs here are manageable. Then just get out and enjoy the U.P. outdoors!
