There are so many amazing gardens and nurseries in this are but THIS ONE takes the cake! Usually wholesale nurseries can be overwhelming because there is a feeling of ; if you don’t know exactly what you want or you ask questions they typically are annoyed. Not here, this feels like a friendly , family run operation by people who are happy to share their expertise. I was lucky enough to speak at length with the owner about begonias (and their fascinating history in SB) and ornamental grasses. Randy, the owner, is so passionate and knowledgeable and happy to share a conversation about the plants. This is rare. He also helped figure out a mystery muhlenbergia grass and went so far as to emailing me photos and asking another “ornamental grass” expert on my behalf. His knowledge , passion, stories, history and love for these plants is remarkable. There are more plants and varieties than you can imagine as far as the eye can see. It’s worth a visit just to see the begonias! I don’t think I will be shopping elsewhere from here on out. Truly a spectacular place run by nice people.

Of all the nurseries in the Santa Barbara area, my first choice for plant quality and selection is always San Marcos Growers. Their website information and availability list save me a ton of time when sourcing plants for projects, and I frequently use it as an information tool for clients. The ability to drive around the nursery and put together a planting design can't be beat. Thank you!

San Marcos Growers nursery is amazing! I love coming here for their knowledge, friendly staff and amazing selection of plants! The variety here is the best! I love riding the carts and have made multiple videos and dozens of pictures showcasing the nursery and beautiful plants. As a landscaper it is joy to ride around for inspiration for my landscape jobs. Sometimes I just enjoy watching the bees, butterflies and humming birds! I'm guilty! I walk in, grab a list to write down all the plants names, sizes and quantity for the plants I purchase. They hand me the keys to the electric cart and I'm off. I ride around feeling like a little boy in Disneyland! They always have every plant I need and many I've never seen before. Thank you all!

San Marcos Growers provides an enormous amount of useful plant information online and for many plants, particularly those that fit well/or are native to the Southern California climate (which is nothing like the majority of the country's climate), they are the best online source for such information. I really appreciate their online help into information on plants which are generally unfamiliar to me since I have lived and worked in a much colder region of the country for the past several years.

I am looking for corymbia ficifolia with pink flowers rather than the more common red variety. Are they grown in California?

Penelope West | Sep 20, 2021
Randy Baldwin | Sep 20, 2021

Selected color forms of Corymbia ficifolia, are grafted and available in Australia and some were offered in California 30 years ago. Because of current USDA regulations it has become increasingly difficult to import Eucalyptus and their relatives into the US. Australian botanist Dr. Dean Nicolle, who specializes in eucalypt systematics, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo botanist Dr. Matt Ritter, who also specializes in eucalypts, are convinced that pink and white flowering trees seen mixed into C. ficifolia plantings in California are the result of hybridization between C. ficifolia and the white flowering C. calophylla. All C. ficifolia grown in California nurseries are done so from seed, so there would be a chance one could get one of these hybrid white of pink flowered ones, but it would not be identifiable until the plant flowers and this is usually not for several years, so it really would be hard to request and get a pink flowered tree.
