My husband and I lived at Elan from 2017-2021; we were good tenants and always paid our rent on time. In 2021, we decided to move due to increases in rent. Our new lease started in January 2022, but our lease at Elan didn't end until February; we were told it would be a $5,000 fee to end our lease early so we decided to keep it for that last month, even though it was vacant and we weren't living in it, because paying that month of rent was cheaper than breaking the lease. I called the leasing office ahead of time and discussed this with someone who said because we wouldn't be living there the last month, they could subtract our last month of pet rent and our parking expense. When we received our bill for our last month of rent, both the pet rent and parking expense were included (over $200 difference). I called the leasing office again and spoke with someone who apologized for the inconvenience and removed those charges from our last bill, we then paid it. We received a check for our security deposit a month or so later and noticed that it was about $200 short of what we were owed. I called the leasing office at Elan to ask why, and they explained that they took out costs for water, parking, and pet rent for the last month because we hadn't paid it (keep in mind, none of these were included in our last bill and had we not inquired about it, they would have just blindly charged us). We explained nobody had been in the apartment for the last month so there shouldn't have been any water usage, and we also explained that we originally received a bill including pet rent and parking, but that their office updated the bill as we didn't have a pet living there for the last month and the parking spot was no longer assigned to us. They said they would look into it. Over the last few months, there has been countless back and fourth on this, but Elan has still yet to give us our security deposit back. We hadn't cashed the original check (which was less than owed) because we were told a few months ago that they would be sending a new check, but nothing has come. We have sent emails, left voice messages, and talked to several people, and still, no answers and no money back at all. It has now been seven months since we moved out and we have still have not been reimbursed for our security deposit- not even part of it. The law in MA states a landlord much send the security deposit back within 30 days from the termination of occupancy. I know $500 may not seem like a lot to a large corporation, but it is to us, and I'm having trouble understanding what the problem is here. When we first moved into Elan Union Market, we did enjoy our time there. We overlooked the low-quality appliances (our washer/dryer hadn't worked for the 3.5 years we lived there, our water heater leaked and caused damage in the floors, our dishwasher broke often, etc.), the loud neighbors and thin walls, and nobody enforcing rules about picking up after your dogs or smoking in the common areas. However, with the high rent and now the lack of ethics with the security deposit, I would not recommend living there. Update: Since I first posted this, I have left five messages with the phone number provided by management and my husband has left three messages. We have still not spoken with management and we have still not seen a dime of our $500 security deposit. It has been nine months since we moved out. Please just give us our money back.

Update: Most of issues related to this has been resolved. They put signs on the entrance asking the delivery person to drop the package to the mailroom. But missing/stolen package is still an issue. Finding a package is never an easy thing here. You need to navigate around two buildings and search all possible locations with tons of packages. If someone send you a gift without notice, you probably will miss it. I lost my packages more than three times. Why the front door delivery is not available?

0 office help on noise complaint, I have super noisy upstairs neighbors that there dog bark every day 7am-6pm since April 2022. Not kidding, I’m having mental health issues now because of that. I reached out to the office, and office told me they can not do anything about this. I called to police and animal control, nothing is stopping that dog bark. And for the fourth month now, the dog is still barking. Worst months of my life. Im still hearing that dog bark. Worst office management and support for their tenants. Not useful at all. I’m planning on taking legal actions on this now.
