Shepherd of the Valley is my Home Church I look forward to the uplifting worship, special music and inspirational messages that help me get spiritual strength to face challenges in life. I look forward to how, when I bring my extended family to church, there is a time for them to experience God’s spiritual strength through children’s church. I also have found that the pastor’s children’s messages have really helped me understand how my faith can make a difference in life.

The congregation at Shepherd of the Valley has become like family to me. My husband and I have been attending here for a little over 10 years. We have been through a lot together. Enjoying great times and navigating difficult days, rejoicing in God's goodness through it all!! I am so grateful to be here in this body of believers.

I have a charismatic church background, but got burned out with some of the hype, hysteria and hucksterism I saw. Yet, I still believe in the continuation of healing gifts mentioned in the Bible. What is your view on healing gifts for today?

I'm struggling with health issues. Do you do the stuff that Jesus and the early disciples did with the laying on of hands and the offering up of healing prayers?

Do you offer individual cups for Holy Communion? I'm worried about catching a virus. And using individual cups seems more aesthetically appealing than dipping and/or sipping from a common cup.

Jess Knauft of Santa Ynez Valley, California | Sep 17, 2020

Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran uses individual cups for Holy Communion. The sacrament is viewed as a type of medicine for those who desire a "close" relationship with Jesus. Hence, the church believes in "close" communion for those who have faith. As the Lutheran Catechism puts it: "...that person is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.”

If you do not have an understanding of the sacrament, the pastor would love to get together with you and discuss its meaning and how faith in the "close" nature of Jesus in the sacrament can make a positive difference in actualizing its benefits.

Will my children get anything out of the service that will help them be better in life?

Jess Knauft of Santa Ynez Valley, California | Sep 17, 2020
Jess Knauft of Santa Ynez Valley, California | Sep 17, 2020

Yes! Children are encouraged to worship during the first part of the worship service with their parents. They are given an opportunity to attend children's Sunday school following the children's sermon. Each week a children's message from the pastor is given to engage their attention and help them connect to God and His plan for their life. During the sacrament of Holy Communion children are invited back in, and up at the communion rail they can receive a pastoral prayer blessing for the week!
