The Ranger is extremely well informed, and she makes this history come alive as she explains the family stories and architectural elements of this plantation. We were very pleased by her narration of the life for upstairs and downstairs people who lived there for a span of 170 years. I would recommend this tour for anyone who loves historical truth and not polished fables. The grounds are lovely, but the Ranger talk is valuable.

Pretty disappointed honestly. Showed up unsure of if I’d want to do the tour (considering I understand the importance of knowing the history but feel strongly about being respectful of a space in which human beings were abused for decades), and was going to base that decision off of first impressions (I only wanted to do the tour if the history was told as it is, and not misconstrued). Immediately knew the answer would be no when I ent the Visitor’s Center and began reading about the family. One of the signs giving information about a wife of one of the owners describes her “suffering and sacrifices” and such, yet hardly gives any information about the true suffering of those enslaved. Then, next to that, there is a whole STATUE of the ‘man’ who heavily fought for slavery throughout his entire political career, his display talking all about how his “success.” I am simply appalled. I can only hope the actual house and tour itself gives better commentary on the history, and thoroughly explains the horrible things that “successful” politician did. No person that literally owned other people deserves a statue of his face displayed in the very place that his terror took place. Not saying don’t talk about him, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to do it. Do better. But hey—at least the bathrooms were clean and the staff was kind.

Such a beautiful plantation with true southern charm and history! I felt like I was stepping back into time. Our guide, Duke, did a wonderful job!
