These can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement. The exact cause of a person's TMJ disorder is often difficult to determine without a proper examination. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child go to the dentist by 1 year old or within 6 months after their first tooth erupts [whichever is earlier].
