I want to share my experience in the joy, intellectual stimulation and global/universel information that the Braille and Talking Book Library has brought into my mother Carol Mc Lean's life as a woman who later in life was challenged by blindness. My mother is a retired educator who instilled my brothers and I the deep satisfaction of reading. We grew up in a very rural area with no TV so other than radio the saturation of media was nil.She was also all three of our teacher in a small grammar school where the thrill @ 2PM was "Tarzan" being read aloud by her or maybe "The Jungle Book".. Fast forward to 12 years ago as macular degeneration began to quickly take away her second greatest passion of the written word. It's been a very hard journey however her world has widened with the gift of her "tapes" and the assistance of this wonderful institution.... Opera is next with NPR keeping her happy... Both entities needing support by our community.... Thank you so very much. Nora

You'll have to email your Reader Advisor (btbl@library ca.gov) to initially get setup with BoD first, then you can order books through the the BTBL Online Catalog (btbl.library.ca.gov) and they will arrive as BoD cartridges.
Books are produced exclusively for the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled and are not for resale. Our library program does include free access to some commercial audiobooks--these particular commercial audiobook productions can be purchased from the original publisher through any vendor or retailer that sells audiobooks.
Press the Play/Stop button twice when you are at "End of Book". The first time you press Play/Stop the machine will say "End of Book. Press Play/Stop to return to beginning of book." Press Play/Stop and the book will start over from the beginning. You can also press and hold the RW button down and the book will gradually increase the speed of rewind from 5 seconds to 1 minute to 5 minutes and so forth to the very beginning of the book.
You can return any library materials by placing them into a box that fits them and addressing them to "BTBL, 900 N St, Sacramento, CA 95814". Where you would normally place postage, please write "FREE MATTER FOR THE BLIND" to return postage-free through the U.S. Postal Service. Do not use UPS or FedEX as they do not participate in the Free Matter program. Thank you for returning library materials.
Once we receive your application, it can take up to 5 business days for us to call you with an introduction to the service before we start sending materials. Once we reach you by phone to discuss the service and confirm the information on the application, the materials usually head out the next few business days. If we can't reach you by phone, we wait to hear from you and try contacting you several times and will return your application to you after two months if we cannot reach you. So feel free to give us a call at 800-952-5666. We can check on if your application has been received or not, or give you the introduction when you call.
We will have your Reader Advisor give you a call to talk about your library service. You may also call us at 800-952-5666.
You do not need to return your old machine before the new one is sent. Hold onto the old machine until the new one is received. If you don't have the original machine box, you can use the box that the new machine comes in to return the old machine to us for repair.
