There are only two real hardware stores in Cincinnati. Northside Hardware, and Beck's in Walnut Hills. I've patronized both for years especially for those hard-to-find items that you'll never find in the box stores. I wish I could remember the owners name for Northside (I think it was Bill). He was so helpful and knowledgeable about so many things. I remember going in there back in my late twenties. The store was packed from floor to ceiling, and the aisles were so narrow you had to turn sideways to pass someone. Now some might say that's cool but how do you find what you want? Simple! You just ask Bill. However, you might have to wait a moment or two because there was always a gang of professions and DIYers exchanging ideas and methods about various projects. I can't tell you how much I learned just by hanging out and listening. I'm 71, and I still use things I learned there. Judging from the new signage on the storefront, I'm assuming that Bill has gone to the big hardware store in the sky. To be honest, I use the box stores for their convenience, but if I need something special Northside Hardware is where I'll go. I hope that the current owner(s) are as good as Bill.

Nice resource, a valuable community asset. Has the opportunity and potential to be the neighborhood hero! Hardware is more than selling bits and pieces. Knowledge, service, and problem solving sets the the neighborhood hardware store apart from the big home center or online stores. Give these guys a visit, you won't be disappointed!

Here's an anecdote about Bill: A friend of mine who is now 60 used to live in Northside when he was a child. His father would always send him over to the hardware store to get cigarettes which Bill sold at the time. Bill carried charge accounts then and when the young man walked in Bill would always say '1540 Henderson'. That being the father's address. My friend moved away from Northside and didn't come back for 25 years and of course as soon as he walked in to the hardware store in Northside Bill looked up and said '1540 Henderson'. It was a sad loss for Northside when Bill left us.
Yes indeed! and accurately.
