My Family Promise journey started when I was a student and I did an internship there. The first thing I learned was that not all homeless people are what the stereotype looks like, in fact most aren’t. Most of the families I met in the program had experienced circumstances that could happen to anyone resulting in not having a home of their own. The program is designed for families with children so not everyone in the community can be helped. Also the program has limited capacity so at any given moment a family may not be able to be helped. However, once chosen to participate, Family Promise workers (student interns, social workers, mental health counselors, business professionals and a myriad of volunteers) work very hard with families to empower them to change their lives. It does take work and it does take sacrifices; however, the result can be amazing. Family Promise does not change their lives, Family Promise supports them while they work hard to change it themselves. I have witnessed so many families succeed! After I finished school I continued my relationship with Family Promise as a volunteer. I have been inspired by these families throughout my Family Promise journey which is is 9 years strong.

To qualify for the program you have to be a parent/guardian with minor children. You need to be working or willing to find employment by 10 days upon entry. No extensive criminal history. They can't accept persons with recent domestic violence or severe mental health issues. Participants can stay between 60 to 90 days depending on performance in the program and it takes about 2 weeks to complete the entry process.
