We have adopted 3 pets from here and it was the best experience! This is the most reasonable and laid back shelter I have ever dealt with! They really know the animal's personalities and help you find the best match for your family!

I will keep the background short - unless the WSHS wants me to post the entire communication history. After going through the adoption process to the point where my son was about to adopt a dog, Hank - upon learning that my son was autistic - pulled the plug on the adoption at the 11th hour. I am not sure why WSHS decided to pull the plug after the foster felt confidant that Hank's needs would be met and that he would be a good match my son. I asked them for an explanation in an email and was ignored. I was hoping to get an answer from them as to why they would revoke an adoption decision after learning a child in the household has "autism"? Does Kitty (the adoption manager) know what that diagnosis means and can she articulate why that would not be a good environment for a foster dog? Are there any other learning disabilities that impact adoption decisions? Does WSHS typically make arbitrary adoption decisions? It appears that my review is not the only one with this experience. It is just the only one who's adoption decision appears to be made based on prejudice and ignorance of a medical condition. I asked these same questions in two emails and was ignored. I hope that WSHS can take the time to answer them. Despite adopting two pets in the last 25 years from this place, I wouldn't do it again. It appears that the management is in their own world and does not really care about connecting good caring people with animals who need a home.

We recently adopted two older cats from WSHS. The process was simple and our two new cats are healthy, happy, and social. The cats are microchipped and up to date on shots and vet exams. I highly recommend adopting a cat from this wonderful organization!

What kind of dog is it?
Hi, we are a shelter in Illinois. Unless you have one of our animals, we recommend you contact an animal rescue or shelter near you for assistance.
Hi, we don't provide vet care for the public. If you need a low cost clinic, check out our resources page: https://wshs-dg.org/resource-center/helpful-pet-links/284-low-cost-spay-neuter-programs Many low cost spay/neuter clinics also help with vaccines.
Hi Debbie, absolutely! If they are in almost new condition, we will send them to Sharing Connections here in Downers Grove. If they look used, we will either use them at our adoption center or send them to our rural rescue partners. Thank you for thinking of us!
please call the shelter and explain the situation. If they aren't able to actually take the dog, they will do there best to help you.
Hi Dolores, that's a great question. We don't do any space or neuters at our facility, we contract with local veterinarians for the animals in our care. The local veterinary practices that we use and love include West Suburban Veterinary Associates in Westmont, Partners and Paws Veterinary Services in Lisle, The Friendly Vet in Lisle and All Creatures Great and Small in Downers Grove. If you need a low cost veterinary clinic, check out Spay Illinois in Lisle. Thank you for spaying and neutering and good luck!
Hi, please visit our website at www.wshs-dg.org and click on the Adopt tab. You'll find all of our adoption information there including pictures of our adoptable animals.
It's a blast volunteering. Please go here https://www.wshs-dg.org/get-involved/volunteer
Call the village and see what they have to say

I'll be glad to forward the info to the proper authorities. They can evaluate the problem and then take further action if necessary. Do they all (cats & dogs stay inside the house or are they kept outside? And thanks for the info!
No
Lydia the best thing to do is to call and ask. I am a volunteer there and i also sew so i could probably turn all your scraps into something useful for the critters. It is very kind of you to offer these things
