Jacqueline is an absolute god send!! She solved my problem ASAP and was a pleasure to talk to. Amazing customer service!!

Really amazing experience with their customer service. I have called 3x since moving into a South SF home, and there has been 0 wait time on the call. The lady was polite and informative of services and answered all my questions detailed. I was expecting a 30 min call, as is common for other utilities, and I finished the call in 3 minutes. Thank you!!

Very bad service and often elects not to puck up my trash in Millbrae. Also, too expense for being picky about type of trash.

Thank you for asking. Detailed instructions for battery recycling can be found using our search engine at ssfscavenger.com/sort-smart. We really appreciate everyone who takes the trouble to dispose of batteries safely!
Yes. Buyback Center hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00a – 1:00pm. No weekend hours. Thank you for asking!
Thank you for asking! It depends on the type of bulb. If it's a fluorescent tube or bulb, or a smart bulb, it contains hazardous materials and requires special handling. See if your favorite retailer will take them back. If no, schedule an appointment to bring them to one of San Mateo County's free HHW collection events (call 650.363.4718). You can also bring them to Blue Line Transfer but fees apply. Other types of bulbs (incandescent, LED, halogen) are allowed in the garbage.
Blown-in insulation or fiberglass batts are not classified as hazardous materials, and can be disposed of as regular trash. The materials must be bagged and fully contained before they can be collected. Please call our office to discuss options for collection. Our customer service representatives are available Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 4:30 pm, 650-589-4020. Thank you!
Thank you for asking! Commercial extinguishers and any extinguisher that isn’t empty should be handled as hazardous waste. Visit https://www.smchealth.org/hhw for help. Residential extinguishers are typically dry chemical (sodium bicarbonate or monoammonium phosphate) and carbon dioxide. These are not hazardous and can be safely discharged into a bag or box which can be selaed and placed in the garbage. Be sure to wear goggles and a protective mask, and to discharge away from other people and pets. Empty plastic extinguishers can be recycled with other containers. Empty metal extinguishers should be handled as scrap metal. Please give us a call at 650.589.4020 with any additional questions.
Hi William, It's difficult for us to answer without knowing details of the location. Please call our office if it was missed. 650.589.4020.
Thank you for asking! Old CDs cannot be recycled through our program. Please put them in the garbage. You may also consider donating them (if they still play) or taking them to a drop-off facility that accepts them for recycling. Use the search engine at recyclestuff.org to find options nearest you.
Thank you for asking! Yes, we accept scrap metal and appliances. Charges will apply.
Thank you for asking. Liner bags should not be used for the collection of residential organic waste. Bags (even bio/compostable varieties) act as barriers to the anaerobic digestion process used to break materials down. Please put your food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings directly into your green organic cart.
If the buckets are empty and dry, they can be disposed of with your regular trash. If they have paint in them, and if you are bringing them from your home, you can make an appointment with the San Mateo County Household Hazardous Waste program to dispose of them. Go to https://www.smchealth.org/post/make-hhw-drop-appointment to find locations and make appointments. The service is free for San Mateo County residents.
Thank you for asking. We accept #6 polystyrene/Styrofoam at Blue Line Transfer Station as trash. If it is totally clean (no tape, labels, or other) you might look into a drop-off recycling site like Green Citizen in Burlingame. Information here: https://greencitizen.com/learn-more/styrofoam-recycling/ or call (650) 493-8700.

Yes, cardboard should be flattened, bundled and placed next to the blue cart for collection.
Yes, we provide garbage bins. Please call customer service at 650-589-4020 for assistance.
Our drivers are making the normal Monday pickups today, and will probably be arriving at homes and businesses earlier than normal due to less traffic on the roads. The transfer station is on holiday hours, open from 6 am to 12 noon. Please call 650.589.4020 for more information.
The best way is to flatten the cardboard, bundle it, and leave it next to the blue bin for the driver to collect. This has the added benefit of reducing the chances of materials jamming in the bin.
