Like many other government agencies the employees here will do everything they can NOT to help you. So try to have your ducks in a row and hope they are having a good day. Otherwise you will not get anything done.
R. K. Reed
We just moved to the area and hadn’t received our paperwork to transfer utilities into our name. Our water was shut off yesterday, so I had to come in and fix the issue immediately. I had to bring both of my sons who are both nonverbal autistic. If you know anything about autism, changes in routine can cause an array of issues and adverse behaviors, some quite dangerous for them. We came into the office and my youngest was starting to have a sensory meltdown which always starts with spinning and running then it escalates. In order to attempt to keep my sons safe, I closed the door to the office. Immediately the woman behind the counter told me that wasn’t allowed. I tried to explain the situation about their disability but she was not helpful and did not accommodate or look for a solution to assist us. Another woman came to the window, called me over, pointed at the door and told me to open it. Again I tried to explain their disability and that they have autism, are elopers and could be hurt. She cut me off, pointed her finger in my face and told me to “control your children” with such disdain. I suppose she has never dealt with children that do not have basic language comprehension. She informed me that this is a public facility and that there are others in there besides me. She said we could go out into the hallway if we needed to, I assume she just does not have any idea of what autism is and how to behave towards children who have it. I was shocked. No accommodations or help for a simple request to close the door for a few minutes to fill out paperwork. I was forced to sit on the floor of the open door, as there were no chairs, to block my sons from getting out. I understand policy. But I also understand simple kindness and decency in situations that are clearly not ideal. I do not understand being unable and unwilling to assist with reasonable requests for those who have disabilities to also have access to your public building. I hope there were security cameras in that office so that maybe this can be a learning opportunity for your staff. It is disgraceful to treat human beings like that and deny them safe access to take care of necessary tasks such as setting up water services when you have no option to do it over the phone or online. As a final note, I would also like to state, there were zero other residents/customers in the office the entire time we were there. We were the only ones and rather than provide assistance to the only people in the entire office trying to set up services, I was snarled at and ignored when seeking reasonable accommodations to get our water turned back on and put in our name. In an entire office of staff, no one could help. The staff stepping over me were happy to make jokes about the lack of chairs for us but not a single offer of help.
