Yes, it's safe. It's river water. It was used back in the day as a sluice to gather gold from my understanding. It's not to drink like any other river, just to swim and cool off.

Yes, they do. And if you go through the gate entrance off Vallombrosa (just before Bruce Rd) they have several spots that have bbqs that are really nice as well!
Being that it is a natural river it remains pretty cool but if the sun is on it throughout the day it can be around 65° in late afternoons depending on how hot the day was. But most would say it's a refreshing swim.
