Nice mansion. Julius Berwind from Philadelphia had the mansion built. He was a coal Barron. They would spend about $350,000 in the late 1800s, entertaining during each season. The season lasted about 8 weeks for during the summer. That equates to about $12Million in today's money. They must have had a raring good time. The preservation society keep up the mansions very well.

The Elms is an absolutely stunning property. The open concept guides you from room to room. Make sure you walk through the entire property. The gardens in the back is a serene place that will leave you wondering in peace. My recommendation is to purchase an annual membership. There are different levels that you can choose from to fit your family situation. This will not only save you money, but it is also a tax-deductible gift. Also, purchase your tickets/membership online. It is easy and will save you time when you first arrive.

We highly recommend getting a two stop pass, visiting the breakers first, then going the Elms, and then walking to eat lunch downtown. The Elms is smaller than the breakers and has a wonderfully sophisticated, intimate, and tasteful ambience. There are carpet walkways to protect the flooring. The structure of the mansion is such that you often need to peer into a room from the hallway. A good bit of the furniture is not original. It is cool to see the original electric breaker and the white subway tile bathrooms that have aged quite well over a hundred years.

If you going to visit more than one mansion , it pays to do a package , which is 3 mansions for $40 something per person.
Yes, you use the same tix to enter both mansions.
He would need to have a ticket to view the inside of the Mansion but the exterior is open for viewing and you may walk on the grass.
