I have adopted from NKAS three times in the past eight years; one senior cat and two kittens. Each time has been a great experience. I visit a couple of times a year, and frequently recommend the shelter to people who are looking to adopt. The shelter is as clean as possible, given its often crowded circumstances. The staff work tirelessly to keep the facility clean and the animals healthy. Everybody is friendly and conscientious, and there’s an air of celebration whenever they send a pet to its new home. The shelter has limited space and tries to foster out animals that need more individual attention, so you may not always see the same pets in-house that are listed on the adoption sites. (They do usually indicate in the listings if an animal is fostered) As another reviewer mentioned, the ACOs are not judgmental. They certainly care about whether you will provide a responsible and loving home — don’t mistake non-judgment for undiscerning — but they are less rigid about what that entails than some other shelters are. I love this place. My only reason for rating it 4 stars instead of 5 is that the town does not give it the attention it deserves. NK has a knack for hiring good people and expecting them to accomplish huge tasks with minuscule resources. The shelter staff consists of two part-time animal control officers and a contingent of very dedicated volunteers. It is not unusual to drop in during visiting hours and find that the ACO is out on a call and one or two volunteers are holding down the fort. Geographically, NK is a large town for RI, and with a population of 22-24,000 the scope of an ACO’s job is beyond what amounts to 1.25 full-timers. Because the shelter’s budget is insufficient, it relies heavily on donations. Luckily, the town has people who care about animal welfare and are willing to contribute time and supplies. This is very much a community effort.

The young woman who works there is so very kind. There is NO JUDGMENT Unlike other shelters I called. My 2 cats are together in a huge cage with outdoor access which they loved. They do not charge any $ but of course a donation is appropriate. I can't say enough good things about them. The woman made a very sad day just a little bit easier.

Louis, you should contact Brittany, the ACO, at the shelter to find out. She is usually there between 9-2 Monday through Friday, unless she is out on a call.
As a town shelter we get what ever is surrendered or comes in as a stray
There is liability insurance when you have pits, loose or not.
