Had to surrender my dog due to unfortunate circumstances and the intake manager was very rude. I love this shelter and what they’re about but I was very taken aback by how stand offish she was when this is already a hard decision I was forced to make. I called twice and was transferred and sent to voicemail and left my information. No one ever got back to me, not a big deal, I went in to make the appointment in person. When I got there they told me to call and speak to the intake manager and I said I would rather not do that because no one had gotten back to me and I was on a time frame for how much longer I could keep her. The intake manager then came out and starting being very aggressive about how they’re over crowded and very busy which I can understand and I told her such. She made the appointment with me and then said I remember you now and I did call you back both times and it said your mailbox isn’t set up. Not true, I never got a call from them and my mailbox is set up and not full. I told her that’s weird i never got a call and it should be set up. She continued to aggressively persist that she was in the right and she did in fact call me. I didn’t want to argue with her I was already having a hard time with this and the last thing I needed was her being condescending towards me. I’m very grateful I was able to take my dog there and I do understand the difficulties of over crowding and understaffing however this experience was completely out of pocket. I was not rude to her, I wasn’t even mad about them not getting back to me I just needed to make the appointment.

We called them to surrender our dog. We were told they only take dogs that are on the island. We live in Fernandina beach but over the bridge. Doesn’t sound right to me. Called Nassau animal shelter and they would not take him either. This is why there are so many loose dogs around here. Ridiculous!!!

The Aurora Dog Park was my visit to NHS and so many positive things I can say about this facility but I'll start with how well kept it is and the people and volunteers are kind and friendly. The park manager was professional and courteous and was attentive to not only my needs but to the other customers and members who walked through the door. I look forward to bringing my fur babies to visit and jump in the dog bone shaped pool. 🙂 Beautiful facility and I highly recommend it for not only residents but for any short or long term visitor(s) who may be traveling with a fur buddy.

I've been coming here for about a year now once or twice a week. My rental does not allow cats, which makes it horrible, but it is nice to see the cats they offer. Each and every time I have been there has been amazing. Everyone I'd very friendly and always wear a smile. It is very clean everywhere, and everyone seems to care about the animals very much. If you are looking to adopt, this will be an amazing place to do so. They get new rotations of animals each week so you get to find new ones each time you go looking there.

I am 11 turning 12 in May and I was wondering if I could volunteer over the summer. However, my parents work so is there any way they could pick me up and drop me off without being there. If not, what other suggestions do you have for volunteering

Hi Meghna! Unfortunately, you would need a guardian with you as you are under 18. If you'd like to support our shelter in other ways, I would suggest fundraising on our behalf! Check out our website for some ideas! https://www.nassauhumane.org/fundraise-on-our-behalf

Charlene Allfrey | Sep 6, 2019

To my knowledge, the humane society does not handle neutering but there are several good vets in the area that offer the service. We like Nassau Veterinary Hospital on US17, but have heard good things about Amelia Island Animal Hospital and Fernandina Beach Animal Clinic.

Can we come in and look at them

Rebecca Alexander | Sep 6, 2018
Taylor Manns | Sep 6, 2018

They allow you to visit the pets and everything. But they are really stricked about who can adopt. Say you have a dog and wanted a cat. They won't let you adopt the cat because they will fear for its safety. Just go to the Jacksonville human society
