July 17, 2021 - Leadville Ranger District has closed the road to all motor vehicles including ATV beyond this campground until further notice for construction. This means campsites and dispersed camping below the closure are very busy. Limited parking outside the campgrounds for day hikers. Access to Emerald Lake is hike/bike only.

Wonderful campsite. Great location and within decent range of several 14ers and trailheads including Elbert, Massive, La Plata as well as the wonderful little city of Leadville. Nice and quiet while I was there, however it was during the week. Some good site selections. The sites are fairly well spaced apart. Beautiful woods and views of stars at night. The road getting there (Halfmoon Rd.) isn't too bad. A bit rough and narrow at times but go slow and you should be fine.

Generally there are a lot of spots at the actual pay campgrounds. You're allowed to camp pretty much anywhere on road 110, so I suspect you can find a non pay camp site easily as well if you don't care about having a toilet. I would not be worried about it. I cruised through there last week (july 4th weekend) and there was still open places both pay and unpaid.
