We hiked the Pilot Knob trail in October and it was quite beautiful seeing all the fall colors 🍁 The hike had some minor elevation changes which made it a little more interesting. The trails were well maintained and there were benches along the way. The tower at the end was really neat to explore! Will definitely return next time we are in the area!

Close sheets too soon fall is a nice time to visit if full would be crowded. Nice trails.

Very great place to spend the afternoon or the entire week. Spent 5 days camping, fishing, sightseeing and hiking here. The people are friendly and hospitable. The campsites are sizable and electric is available to a lot of them. The trails are well maintained. There is a considerable amount of wildlife to watch while here. We've seen 7 deer in the days we spent here plus many other animals. I will be going next year for another camping trip and pretty sure I will be returning to the park.

Great place for a short hike and a picnic on the lake. The observation tower has some great views. We enjoyed walking around dead man's lake bog. The campground is a bit small but nicely shaded. It also has a nice playground and a gazebo. Fun park!

Okay, but that does not answer my question of when the gates for pilot knob specifically will be open. For those of us who would like to spend family time or free time catching up with friends at the shelter houses or a stroll up to the tower or to the amphitheater, or walking the trails or taking a relaxed evening drive through. Are y'all thinking more around May 1st? Or?
Not on the main road, but Maybe in the campgrounds and parking lots. I would suggest speaking with the park ranger.
Have to pay, but it costs less than electric sites
As far as I know no the lakes are pretty swampy looking, lots of lilypads and under growth. Its more for taking in the scenery and some fishing
It's probably the equivalent of about 3 stories worth of stairs.
The park is open, but some portions are closed off to vehicles for trails and winter weather. Please find more info here: https://www.iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/State-Parks/Alerts-and-Closures
No cabins at the park. And no kayak/boat rentals that i know of. No lake to boat on. The Lodge in forest city does rent kayaks usually for the winnebago River.
