The more information you have about the art and artist the better, e.g., signature of artist, any certificates of authenticity, receipts, previous owners, other paper work, etc. Providing research and any paper work will save the appraiser time in his or her research, so you might be able to save money on the appraisal. If you live in a state other than North Carolina, I suggest checking with a local museum or university for names of certified appraisers.
