I am spiritual, not religious and this place meets me there. It is a community that cares about the people that attend and I had a visceral experience of love the moment I walked into this place. To me, it is a “come as you are” type of place. I have showed up teary eyed and exhausted from despair and I have showed up cheery and full of joy. I am met with loving arms each and every time, no matter how I show up. I love to hug and this place delivers a space where that is the norm. And there is no pressure if you choose not to hug. It is a place where your boundaries are respected and honored. Your unique personality is welcome here and is celebrated! I have been going to the Center for over 5 years and I can’t tell you how much being a part of this community has changed my life. After attending for some time I started to volunteer to help the Center continue to serve others as it did me when I first visited. I feel a sense of connectedness I have never felt before in a spiritual community. I feel safe, accepted, loved and seen. The friendships I have made are deep and meaningful. One thing I would say to someone looking for a spiritual home would be to check it out! The love you feel may be something you aren’t used too. I know I wasn’t used to it but I kept going back because I knew deep down I had that same kind of love inside of me. This Center has helped me to open myself up to being loved in a way I had never imagined and I get to love in turn. Give it a try and be sure to pull me aside and say hello when you do come. The Oakland Center is more than my Spiritual home...it is a fundamental part of my life. This is where I learn, grow, and gain a greater understanding of myself and the world. From my very first day here I was welcomed; After years of searching, I felt I had found a nurturing and safe place to express myself without reservation. The Mission and Vision statement for the Center notes that "We are a welcoming and inclusive spiritual community..." and the Oakland Center has been exactly that for me. Regardless of your religious upbringing/roots, I believe you will find the Oakland Center to be a wonderful part of your "spiritual portfolio".
