Generally, no. You can get a ‘temp plate’ which should be good for 10 days. This will enable you to legally drive the vehicle, allowing you to get it inspected and/or make any necessary repairs before getting an official license plate. Keep in mind that you will need valid insurance to get any plate. I believe the exception to this is if the vehicle is coming from out-of-state. (This is just from my experience. I am not a DMV employee)
