I have lived here now for about 6 weeks and thus far I am very happy with my choice. You cannot beat the location. It is close to public transit, which was very important to me, and the being on the harbor is great with great walking paths and benches to sit and enjoy the weather. The positives of the community thus far outweigh the 2 mildly negative things that occurred. The rental application process was a bit of a pain, I would guess this was more from the corporate level rather than the community management but my feedback was appreciated and I believe taken seriously. The second problem was that I was assigned and incorrect parking spot in the garage. This did get resolved promptly and I was offered my choice of available spots and it was nice to have the option to choose what worked for me. I had an issue with my mailbox key not working. I submitted a request on Friday afternoon and this was resolved on Monday. I did read the other reviews and it almost deterred me from choosing to live here. I worry about the break-ins to cars but let's face it, crime is everywhere. There are break-ins at the garages at the hospitals where I work. I did see a security person when I was walking into the community once. This is a large community to patrol. Thus far, I am very happy with choosing JLS. The apartments seem well insulated, I rarely hear any activity from any of my neighbors, including the units above me. Yes, you can hear the train horns blow, not sure that JLS can be held responsible for that. If train noises bother you then this may not be your place. Thus far I have not felt unsafe here and I am telling you, you cannot beat the location. I would give a five star rating but I believe that gets reserved for perfection.

This place has gone downhill fast. No leasing office open. Management has taken away amenities residents pay for. Find another place, this one is overpriced and they don't give you what they promise on their website.

Crime is a huge problem here. Expect your car to get broken into at least once. Maintenance staff cannot be trusted and your unit may get burglarized as a result. The "secure" package room was burglarized a week after it was finished. Community manager is pleasant and seems to care about this. I cannot say the same for the company running this place. They seem to think Oakland PD will do something and neglect to install additional security. They even blame their tenants for not keeping valuables out of sight and letting others tailgate into the community. Waterfront is nice. Train is loud. Update - running tally of issues: April - car break in, multiple vehicles impacted May - residence burglary, Essex corporate barely responded to my requests to fix until I withheld rent, never addressed any security concerns with serious action May - package room burglarized July - Essex sends note to tenants indicating it is the tenants responsibility to create a safe environment August - community gate malfunctioning, left open, no alert from Essex to use other entrance / mitigate the security issue September - mailboxes burglarized September - motorcycle stolen from one of the garages Update: January 2022 - burglary via sliding glass door, two vehicle break ins, motorcycle theft February 2022 - vehicle break in and theft, mail theft April 2022 - burglary in unit (this is all occurring while there are paid security guards roaming the grounds, clearly doing nothing) Final update: After all of the security issues at this location, management decided the best course of action was to send out notices of crime for a few months and then put digital smart locks on all the units. No notable changes other than some window dressing activity. The icing on the cake for me is that the installation of the smart locks cracked the wood around the deadbolt, thus making the door less safe!

It's very nice but loud! That darn train. I'm sure I'll have permanent hearing damage down the line for spending so much time there. That aside, the weather is pretty much perfect every day, so make sure to wear sunscreen!
