I like the outdoors

Apr 14, 2022

I grew up in this parish and went through the local Catholic schools here in Medford some 50 years ago. After that I moved away from the valley. Now I have returned. During my time away, I had the opportunity to visit several times and was sad to see that my old parish had become some what of a "feel good, watered down catholicism" parish. That thought made me less that excited about returning to thus parish. Now that I am back in the valley and am attending Mass again here at Sacred Heart-wow, has it changed from the days when I visited. I am thrilled to be a member of this parish. We are fortunate to have such faithful priests. The liturgies are reverent, the homilies faithful to the magisterium, the liturgical music moving. I have had the opportunity to attend the sacrament of reconciliation here as well and it was nice to see the church full of penitents. There are many young people at Mass as well. These are all things that I have not seen in years at my previous parishes. This is a wonderful parish with much to offer.

Main services on Saturday night at 5:30 and Sundays at 8:30 a.m. Very personable priests. Limit of first 100 people to show up. Great musicians.

So.. this might be a heavy review. Attending 40% of Mass here tonight actually brought me to tears (we walked out right after the Homily). The following review is not only based on personal experience and feelings, but also my MASTERS DEGREE in SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY. The church itself is gorgeous and beautiful. The Mass started out as you would expect, but when it got to the Homily, things became extremely problematic. The Gospel itself was about St. John the Baptist. As most people know, he sort of played the role of preparing things for Jesus, by baptizing them and speaking of his coming. For those who don't know, a Homily is when the priest gives a short lecture based off of the readings and Gospel, immediately after reading the Gospel. He started off okay, summarizing the readings, but then his talk took a dark and scary turn. He proposed the blanket question, "what is wrong with society today," and used that to basically offer up his personal opinion from a so-called "secular perspective" (which is already odd, this is NOT his job). He proceeds to blame "self-help" movements and pinpoints two ways in which it has helped destroy society: 1) "Self Help removes personal responsibility." He then uses this as a springboard for victim-blaming, dismissal of childhood suffering, abuse, and trauma, and denial of the influence of both nature and nurture. It was like I was watching Fox News? LET IT BE KNOWN. Modern and mainstream research in this field absolutely disagrees with this bespectacled priest when it comes to his position, a self-admitted secular (its actually psychological science!) position, he should not even be giving during a Mass. Personal conversations? Sure. Mass? NO. In another context this is also just wrong because anyone who has ever gone to purchase a self help book, does so because he or she WANTS to take control of their life. 2) He completely contradicts himself by then saying that self-help movements destroy society by also claiming that the "self can help the self" is a false message. You might be wondering the same thing I did at this point, how can you champion personal responsibility, yet also claim that one should not attempt to solve their own problems? He says, Jesus is the only answer to all of life's problems. You hear that Jesus? Next time I leave my purse at home, I'm going to expect you pay for my son's Happy Meal. This was, without a doubt, the WORST Homily I have EVER HEARD in my entire life, and I have been to A LOT of Masses and met A LOT of priests. Shame on you, Sacred Heart, for spreading such a dis-compassionate and anti-research message that Christ himself would NEVER agree with. Especially during the Christmas season when everyone is there to hear something joyful, loving, and/or inspiring, not to mention during a teen mass?? This is the first time in my life I have ever left in the middle of the Mass because I literally felt too uncomfortable and disgusted to eat Communion from a particular priest.

Exceptionally Beautiful building on the inside and the building and campus are nice on the outside Parish hall is very nice and big for a church hall As far as the service it is a Typical Catholic Church. Most attend out of habit. NOT VERY WELCOMING. The Mass was Not a celebration of Jesus but very somber. They say Jesus is truly present but the service makes it seem like they are sad or don't believe it. Yes the Catholic Church is a Christian church. Yes Jesus is present in the Eucharist so why don't most of those attending act like it. May be they don't really believe that Jesus and the Holy Spirit are really there. I pray for all who attend that there eyes & hearts will be opened to God the Holy Spirits nudging for them to give there life to be TRUE followers of Jesus Christ.
