I worked for Kroger for many years in my 20s, It was quite an awesome experience in which I learned a fair amount of customer service skills that I would later use with my own business. I am quite familiar with the protocol involved with speaking with guests, as I can recall earning several perfect scores from Mystery shoppers. I have a great deal of love for the Kroger company, so It pains me that I would have to write this, but I experienced the worst and most hostile service from cashier Cyndi S Tuesday, June 7 while at the Ralphs on 1930 Lakewood Blvd Beach at around the top of the hour ( I would estimate 10:04 PM). Cyndi was at the self-checkout and I approached her and asked (With an inside voice) "Where can I find the pre-made dinners that you place in the oven ?" she turned around with a rather menacing frown on her face, rolled her eyes, squinted her eyebrows and yelled " What ??" .. I was shocked because that is not how you respond to customers usually. If a store manager wants to roll back the surveillance footage, I am willing to bet that her body language would paint a very clear picture. She said something else that was rude, and I then said oh never mind, and she raised her voice at me and said (Rather loudly with the tone that you would use to discipline a child) " I am on my Break". I was unaware that she was on her break, and said that her attitude was awful. as I turned away I could her telling another employee that " ALL I hear was the oven and I was on my break" rather loudly. As my girlfriend and I were leaving the store( timestamp 10:22 on my receipt) I expressed to Cyndi that I felt that it was inappropriate to talk to customers that way, she rolled her eyes and when I continued to express that it was offensive she barked, once again "I WAS ON MY BREAK", and I said that a simple and polite " I am sorry sir, but I am on break now, please allow me to get someone to help you" would have prevented the whole situation. Cyndi then called her manager over and We spoke Julie arrived on the scene ready to diffuse a situation that Cyndi could have prevented with a better tone of voice, and corrected with an apology. I asked her if she was the manager and she said yes, I explained the situation and that I worked for Kroger for many years and had just moved to Long Beach from LA, and her response was the classic method of saying something nice while being rude and sarcastic, she responded with... "Welcome to Long Beach" I have seen other managers use that trick before, and it is a great way to convey your frustrations and get away with rudeness because you are still saying something nice, but your delivery was offensive. After that, I continued to speak to Julie for about a minute and she kept trying to talk over me as if to justify the situation and was rather condescending. At no point did I ever say anything rude, or was I out of line. I am an extremely polite person. I feel as though Cyndi was obviously having a bad day, or perhaps unhappy working for the store, and then calling Julie to involve herself was equally perturbing. Julie seemed ready for a rude customer, but I was not, I explained the situation and she still seemed highly confrontational, and continued to defend Cyndi's actions. What bugs me here is that I love Ralphs. Its mission statement is "the customer should receive the very best, whether this is the best customer service, best quality or best price". Screaming at an employee is providing the worst possible service imaginable. I can only assume that the 3-star rating the store has is partially due to the service received by Cashier Cyndi. When I worked at my store (Which was a fresh fare) we routinely had service meetings, the Store Director would correct improper behavior by their employees, and reward good behavior.

the cashier evayan was HORRIBLE! beautiful sunny friday afternoon im buying bouquets of flowers & cupcakes for mother’s day, i get to check out theres a dirty grocery belt i had to set my groceries on, but i let it slide, i let her know i hv 3 separate orders & it punishes me because there was no dividers between each order. oh no…i will NEVER “ever” be back! it was MISERABLE, rude & held nothing back. this store is RACIST against white people…the big guy, the manager is actually cool, he’s the reason i go back, but today was the last straw. ill be shopping at gelsons & lazy acres going forward, where “everyone” is treated with respect “REGARDLESS” of race. ✌🏼🫶🏼

It is a nice size neighborhood supermarket. While their prices aren't the best in town, it is always clean and usually well stocked. Staff who work there are friendly but professional.

Requiring masking and have social distancing markings on the floor. Fresh bakery items are individually packaged, and there are dividers between cashiers and customers.
