I called and reserved a dump trailer Wednesday morning, explaining that my church group was going to do volunteer hurricane cleanup near Wilmington this weekend. They reserved the trailer for me to pick up on Friday afternoon and return Monday morning. I then asked about the size of the hitch needed to pull the trailer, and was told it had a pintel hitch. I went looking for the truck-end of a pintel, since none of my three hitches I own were specifically pintel-type hitches. I called later in the afternoon to find out the size ball required, and was first told that there was no size on the ball. Of course there's a size, I said. It's either a 2 inch or 2 5/16 inch. I got put on hold for about ten minutes, then somebody else got on the phone. I explained what I needed to know so I would have the right hitch when I showed up, and that I was also concerned about the suspension height on the trailer. I have a big Ford F250 with 20 inch rims, and I typically have a three inch drop on my hitch ball so the trailer isn't traveling at a weird angle down the highway. I asked the second person if they could measure the distance from the ground to the hitch on the tongue of the level trailer, because I wanted to make sure I had the right adapter. More confusing questions, and then he said he needed to go measure it. On hold for another ten minutes, so now I've been on the phone for almost 25 minutes. Finally a third person gets on and asks me what I'm trying to do. I said pull the dump trailer with an F250 with 20 inch rims. No, he said, what are you doing with the trailer? Like I told the lady this morning, I'm going to Wallace, this side of Wilmington, to do volunteer hurricane cleanup. Well, sorry, but I can't let you rent it. What? Why not? That's our policy; I was told by the higher-ups that we can't let it go to the coast. I asked if it was the distance or the intended use that was the problem. He restated that it couldn't go to the coast. I said, so if I was using it for storm cleanup in Greensboro, I could rent it? Yes, because that's local. I asked what the geography had to do with it if I was paying the rental fee and bringing it back on time. He said, it's just our policy. I asked several times for clarification, and why I wasn't told about this "policy" until later in the day and after I had been on the phone for half an hour (just to make sure I had the appropriate hitch). More non-answers, just made up policies. He then suggested I try their branch in Wilmington, and I explained that there is nothing available to rent anywhere near the coast, and hasn't been for a month. He looked it up and confirmed exactly what I told him. After another request for an explanation on their heretofore unmentioned policy, he said was just doing what he was told. I said that was unfortunate, and that I would certainly never rent anything from them again, and that I would let everybody else know about their policy that prevents people from helping other people, even if they're paying full price on a rental. So now you know; tell your friends.

Questions & Answers

What's the right earthmoving equipment for my job?

Excavators are heavy-duty diggers. Typically, the deeper the hole, the bigger the machine required. They can drill, break rocks, create trenches or dig large holes for foundations. A compact excavator is ideal for heavy digging in a tight space. Loaders are perfect for scooping up loose material and depositing it elsewhere. They move well in soft soil but cannot dig very deeply. Bulldozers' giant blade attachments can push large quantities of dirt, debris, shrubs or building remains to where you want them. A bulldozer can also be outfitted with a rear "ripper" that can tear through rock and soil.

How do I calculate excavator bucket capacity and volume?

Ensuring you have the right size bucket for your project is important for proper production and reducing wear and tear on the equipment. There are several factors to consider and calculations to perform to determine the correct bucket. Generally, you'll use OEM specifications, including the maximum lift capacity, bucket weight and bucket capacity. Find more information and how to calculate whether the capacity of your bucket will work in the United Rentals article, “How to Choose the Right Bucket for Your Excavator or Wheel Loader.”

What size skid steer do I need?

United Rentals | Aug 23, 2021
United Rentals | Aug 23, 2021

The size of skid steer depends on the job you wish to perform. The smallest skid steers typically have a rated operating capacity (ROC) of about 700 pounds and an overall weight of about 3,000 pounds. This smaller size is ideal for a homeowner project as it can usually fit through a walkthrough backyard gate. A very large skid steer can have an ROC in the 3,000-plus-pound range for someone who doesn’t have room for a full-size backhoe or wheel loader. Read more about the seven factors to consider when renting a skid steer from United Rentals.
