I would go with a Garrett metal detector. They have several beginners models plus the AT Pro and AT Gold that are waterproof to ten feet. You don't have to worry about being out in heavy rain with their models. They are fairly easy to learn how to operate also. I have used the AT Gold for several years and really like it.
