Nice stop off for viewing the gorge. Had about 10 vendors on the side of the road that were all very nice local residents with alot of history in the area. Couple picnic areas to sit and have lunch as well. Could also do a couple small flat hikes back further to the gorge from this rest area.

The Highway 64 rest area adjacent to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a short drive northwest of Taos, New Mexico. The rest area itself has free parking, restrooms, vendors, and its a short walk to the bridge. As a bonus, there's also easy access to the West Rim Trail which offers many beautiful views. On a sad note, please be respectful of the surrounding area. Many people have come here to commit suicide. The state reports two to three suicides per year, but the actual number is probably much higher. If you find yourself in the area, I highly recommend visiting.

I was amazed at the sights and scenery while visiting the Rio Grande Gorge. The place is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! Even if you don't walk all the way across the bridge, you still get an eye full! You may get a bit frightened if your scared of heights, but there's the sidewalk you can walk on. It does get busy with ppl. There's a rest area near by as well. Very clean and place to chill, along with a pet area provided. There's fencing, so visitors don't go wandering to the edge of the cliff. It's awesome!! I recommend visiting this place as it's something to experience. So cool. 5 plus stars. Come early, since it's near Taos and you'll have plenty of time to enjoy.

It was breathtakingly high when you first hang your head over the rail from the lookout. Pictures do not do it justice! There's a great rest area there with parking, heated clean restrooms, covered and walled picnic tables (the walls block the wind). It gets very windy here and in the winter time it's VERY cold so pack warm and prepare to walk about 1/4 mile for the best view from the middle. Also with mentioning it has an excellent sidewalk raised and protected from vehicles by a large curb on BOTH sides of the bridge. It's probably not worth it as a destination but if within an hour or so of trip it's definitely worth a detour. Last noteworthy thing that made it a little creepy, warnings everywhere to watch out for jumpers (people apparently go there to commit suicide frequently) and there's a large sign right in the middle with a crisis hotline number.
