I called every nursery in town and they were the only ones with the specific tree I was looking for. When I got there I realized that they probably have every tree ever in existence! The staff were super helpful and endlessly knowledgeable. Highly recommend.

Bonita Creek Nursery is a joy to visit and the rewards for shopping here are substantial. We purchased a Washington navel orange here several years ago and it continues to thrive and produce the sweetest oranges we have ever tasted. The selections at Bonita Creek are unique and the folks here are extremely knowledgeable - a pleasure to visit and there is always something tempting to take home.

I have to agree with the negative reviews here. Dave was scatterbrained and unfortunately the only one there who knew anything. We paid for a no show delivery by what we were told would be pros and seemed more like they needed our help? One of the trees died despite regular watering. Dave wouldn't answer any questions over the phone so we showed up in person and he blamed us for not having rainwater barrels rather than using the water from the hose. He wasn't helpful at all. He never mentioned that one of the two varieties doesn't tolerate the water the city provides and never asked us about having a rain barrel before. He is always rushed and frazzled. Did you know Home Depot and Lowes will allow you to return their trees if something goes wrong and they are cheaper for more mature trees in the first place? We assumed by going to a nursery the product would be superior, but we found out that the product, price, expertise, and customer service were all defunct. No thanks. Never again.

I was there Saturday and Sunday, got a avocado, nectarine and apple tree. Dave and his crew very knowledgeable and helpful. I went back on Sunday to exchange the avocado tree for a large tree, Dave was very helpful.i found there price very good. I would highly recommend this place and go back for more trees.

Do you have any dwarf avocado trees

Stephanie Murphy | Aug 20, 2020
Eric Huber | Aug 20, 2021

Hi, Stephanie. The Wurtz avocado is the only dwarfing avocado we carry. However, while a Wurtz will stay relatively small compared to other types, it can still grow upwards of 8 ft. Additionally, the fruit is nothing special. We carry many other A and B type avocados that can be pruned to be kept small (what we call E-Z pick). Come visit us on Saturday or Sunday, 10-4, and we can give you more information on how to maintain your avocado without sacrificing quality. Thanks for the question!

What’s best fruit trees to plant in San Diego area

A Google User | Aug 20, 2020
Eric Huber | Aug 20, 2021

San Diego weather gives the option for many fruit trees to thrive! We carry all the classics, such as apple, citrus, plums, peaches, pears, avocados, and nectarines, as well as more exotic trees, such as cherimoya, mango, pluots, apriums, and jujubees, to name a few. Finally, we ONLY carry fruit trees that will thrive in Southern California climate; if we don't have it, it likely will be difficult to grow here. We are open every Saturday and Sunday, 10-4. Thanks for the question!

What are best trees to start a new landscape with.? I’m thinking avocado but some trees require male female to produce? My mom had peach tree non productive for years and as soon as she got another peach it produced every year. I want 4 trees total

A Google User | Aug 20, 2020
Bonita Creek Nursery | Aug 20, 2020

Grafted avocado trees, when properly cared for, can produce fruit on their own. By planting A-type and B-type avocado varieties, each tree may produce 20-45% more fruit. Peach trees as well as all stone fruit trees require yearly pruning to remain productive and healthy. When setting up a home orchard, there are so many possibilities. Some factors to consider are ease of care, potential size and harvest season. We suggest selecting trees to provide sequential harvests, so fruit may be enjoyed throughout the four seasons of the year.

Hello Donald, Yes we do have a couple of Japanese Yuzu. Thanks for your interest.

How deep should I make the planter, and how wide, to give my avocado the best chance of growing in an area with clay soil. I see everything from 2 inches deep to 36 inches deep. Help please.

Gus McCrae | Aug 21, 2018
Bonita Creek Nursery | Aug 21, 2018

There are many factors to take into consideration when planting your avocado tree. Most importantly is the type of native soil and if the site is level or preferably sloped. Heavy clay soils could require the use of amendments, but we prefer to keep it at a minimum. Clay soils might also suggest the building of a raised mound if the site is not on a slope. Lateral root expansion trenches will help to get the root system out of the hole and make the acclimation to the native soil. I would strongly recommend a visit or call to the nursery so we might discuss the particulars of your situation in order to optimize the probability for success with your planting.

i have fruit trees to plant at my backyard the soil are kind of sandy what kind of soil do i need and do you have it that i can buy

jscholl99 | Aug 21, 2018
Eric Huber | Aug 20, 2021

Hi there. When planting in the ground, mix 50% native soil and 50% potting soil. Basic potting soil will do, as you want to avoid any fancy amendments, as you want the tree to acclimate to the native soil. Additionally, if your soil is sandy, this means both good drainage but poor retention of nutrients. Make sure to fertilize 4x a year for evergreen trees and 3x a year for deciduous trees. If keeping in a pot, we do recommend our soil! It is a mixture of humic compost, wood shavings, perlite, and sand. It retails for $12 for 10 gallons of soil. We also sell synthetic and organic compost of our own making. The synthetic is $10 for 7 lbs, and organic is $20 for 7 lbs or $35 for 14 lbs. Note: the organic contains 16 different ingredients, including: blood meal, bat guano, crab meal, and alfalfa. Please stop by Saturday or Sunday, 10-4. Thanks for the question!
