We’ve worked with Dustin twice in 13 months, first to buy our home then to refinance. I like working with him because he knows what he’s doing, he knows how to explain the details of a loan or what options are available to home buyers. With Dustin, you’re getting a loan officer who’s committed themselves to learning the ins & out of home loans, & he will lay out everything for you & offer sound advice on the options available to you. Happy to work with him again.

Buying a house during a strong seller’s market is daunting, but Dustin Johnsen at OnPoint Mortgage made it seamless. He ensured that the entire process from pre-approval to locking in an interest rate to closing went smoothly. He’s very quick to respond (and even responded when he was away for a few days), smart, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with. He answered all of my questions and worked collaboratively with my realtor and the title company, ensuring that everyone was kept informed along the way. I highly recommend Dustin and can’t thank him enough!

Dustin Johnsen of Onpoint Credit Union is simply wonderful. In fact, I can honestly say that my husband and I would not be homeowners today if it were not for Dustin. He is incredibly easy to talk to, down to earth, kind, and generous with his time and knowledge; he's always patient, even with easily-confused, nervous first time home buyers like my husband and I. Dustin knows everything I can imagine anyone needing to know about mortgages. He listens carefully, answers questions almost before you know you have them, and works hard to get clients the best deal possible. We can sincerely say: for your mortgage needs, you cannot do better than to work with Dustin Johnsen. He has our strongest recommendation.

Dustin offers the whole package. You get excellent rates and low fees from OnPoint. Dustin is the most responsive Mortgage lender I have ever worked with. Mortgage loans are hurry up and wait. When things happen they happen fast and have deadlines. Dustin was on top of everything throughout the whole process. I will be recommending Dustin to friends and family. Should I purchase again Dustin will be the first one that I call.

Questions & Answers

Should I pay discount points in exchange for a lower interest rate?

Discount points are considered a form of interest. Each point is equal to one percent of the loan amount. You pay them, up front, at your loan closing in exchange for a lower interest rate over the life of your loan. This means more money will be required at closing, however, you will have lower monthly payments over the term of your loan. To determine whether it makes sense for you to pay discount points, you should compare the cost of the discount points to the monthly payments savings created by the lower interest rate. Divide the total cost of the discount points by the savings in each monthly payment. This calculation provides the number of payments you'll make before you actually begin to save money by paying discount points. If the number of months it will take to recoup the discount points is longer than you plan on having this mortgage, you should consider the loan program option that doesn't require discount points to be paid.

Talking to your lender first can save you the time and frustration of finding a house that you can't afford. By speaking to a lender early in your home buying process, you can find out what you can afford in a house and get prequalified and preapproved. Your lender can also help answer questions about the steps you can take to improve credit or increase savings in order to be better prepared for home ownership.

What is the difference between mortgage prequalification and preapproval?

Prequalification is a rough calculation of the mortgage payment you can afford based on the information you provide to your Mortgage Loan Officer. Preapproval means you're essentially ready to start shopping for a house as you have formally applied for the mortgage, and we've determined that you are eligible for a mortgage of a certain amount.
