A couple of times I've had my trash not picked up because my lid would not close it being one to two inches open today I saw my neighbors had it literally half a trash bag open and they took it. Now it's going to cost me $260 a year just to contain another trash can so my measly one inch to 2 inch open of trash will not get skipped.

First let me say that the people working in public works are top notch. They are helpful and attentive. I give the staff 5 stars! That being said let's talk about garbage pick up in Bangor. The city provides a container for waste pickup. They elimaniated recycling and we now have to put cardboard and other recycling into the same single container provided by the city. This increases the amount of wast into a smaller container than what we could get rid of before the change. They have recently launched a campaign to stop people from overfilling the containers and if garbage is visible (ie. the lid is open) or if the lid is held open by garbage above the rim of the container they simply will not empty it. I experienced this recently when my lid was blown open by the wind and they did not take it. I fully admit that the garbage inside was above the rim of the container by approximately 1-2 inches when I closed it (after seeing they did not empty it). I have since purchased an additional container at a cost of $260 per year to prevent this from happening again. Now, as I drive around Bangor, I see trash containers by the roadside overflowing with garbage in all areas of the city. It looks terrible and is not a good look for the city. It seems the policy of not emptying containers that are over the rim is more important than the appearance of Bangor. This is not a friendly policy for Bangor Businesses, thoes looking to move to Bangor, or the residents. Your policy is creating a situation where Bangor appears run down with trash everywhere and will, in the long run, have a negative impact on revenue and the reputation of the city. I strongly encourage the city to seek a better solution to the problem.

They take the time to get back to people and help answer any questions very quickly. Very "nice"...great to be able to say that about any city department anywhere. Great job, Bangor Public Works! Thank you!

Bangor residents can pick up free sand at Public Works, 530 Main Avenue, Monday-Friday from 8am-4:30pm, to use on icy/snowy sidewalks, driveways, and stairs. Residents are allowed to fill two 5-gallon buckets at a time (bring your own buckets). Please note there is some salt mixed into the sand to prevent the sand from freezing in cold weather (5 parts sand to 1 part salt).
Unfortunately, Public Works cannot help with this request. We have no ability to accept rocks for disposal. Maybe you can keep your eyes open for someone looking for fill on their property or advertise them for free on a local social media marketplace.
To put it short answer. Landfill except for the paint. It would be a lot easier to answer all of your questions by calling 207-992-4500. If you call Bangor Public Works Department at that number, we would be able to help you with your questions.
Normally A.I.M. outer Broadway just past 6 Mile Falls store. But if you are a Banger resident that resides here. Spring Cleanup is starting at 6:30 a.m. Monday the 29th. You MUST have it out by that time or you will have to take it to A.I.M.
