Here’s the thing, when you travel to California you expect good food. You can understand when a dude just wants a good ‘ole Double Double from a popular restaurant chain. But then Sushi Ota take a double double to another level. Double Double Spicy Tune roll hits it out of the park. Wow. The customer service is great and the atmosphere is very Southern California.

Omakase Top left to right: Squid, toro, amberjack, seared something, mackerel, idk/Two-stripes, halibut Bottom left to right: Salmon belly, yellowtail belly, bluefin tuna (rib meat?), uni, smoked/seared? (something) As a whole, this omakase ($50) was a solid experience that I would recommend and would go again. My biggest takeaway was that everything was "fresh"/flash frozen well; with some things being exceptionally surprising in freshness that I could not help but smile. The presentation of the omakase from the floral plate, the lineup of colorful sushis, and the individual toppings/garnishes/searing was on point. The temperature of the fish and rice served was pretty ideal; with the consistency of the rice was just firm enough to support the fish atop it while being soft enough to easily and evenly break apart and compliment the fish pairing. The lineup was organized well with the flavors complementing and expanding on the previous experiences, the squid started off the lineup with a neutral flavor, leading into a rich fatty explosion of the toro, and eventually ending with the smokey and sweet (almost candied) flavor of that unknown fish. Also pictured are eel sushi, dragon handroll, crunchy salmon roll, and ablack pepper scallop roll.

Wow. Wow. Wow. We have been looking for our “go to” sushi spot since moving to SD 3 years ago and I am actually upset it took us this long to try Sushi Ota. We LOVE us some good sashimi and this menu did not disappoint. One of the specials was blue fin tuna. If they have it, get it. Everything was super fresh and the staff was lovely. Our server, Chizuka was the perfect amount of attentive. It made the experience that much better! NOTE: Be sure to make a reservation. We were lucky to get in a little earlier than our 7:30pm time slot but the wait after that was past 9pm. This is about to be your next fav spot. Enjoy!

Really, really good! Better than the stuff I've had in Japan at some restaurants... Staff were friendly, food came out quick and the fish were all incredibly fresh. I made a reservation a week ahead and recommend you do the same, walk-ins are probably impossible. Place was packed and there was a line on a Wednesday evening...

Ota is on the complete opposite spectrum from an, "all you can eat" joint
Fantastic sushi, outside dining and take out, SD nights are cool, they have heaters but bring a light jacket
Outside seating, yes.
It's open for dining. Seating is limited and most people get reservations. Might get lucky and might not need to though
Reserve it way ahead if you want to sit at the bar. It was 6 courses for us, but 2 of them were fairly large. It was a pretty incredible experience. I would definitely recommend. It isnt in the menu, either. You just have to ask for it.
Wine, sake, and beer for sure. I don't remember mixed drinks but would not be surprised
