We have been volunteering for Meals on Wheels for about 23 years now, and we continue to find joy in giving back to the community in this way.

I witnessed the volunteer not practicing contactless delivery on several occasions when he handed my mother the meals, even though there was a chair outside the gate. I had to tell him several times to leave the meals on the chair in front of the gate. He pretended not to hear me even though I was standing in the driveway. It made me so upset that he disregarded my mother’s health risk. Even Domino’s Instacart all practice contactless delivery. I had to request another volunteer and the El Cajon office got upset with me, blamed me and tried to tell me the volunteer was very popular and trying to interact with seniors. So what? What was he not comprehending about contactless delivery during COVID!?? I called the main office to let them know about my experience. Now the manager delivers the meals. I guess some volunteers have a hard time following delivery protocol.

You can call your local office and ask what is available locally where you live. But as a deliverer in my neighborhood; they have cold & hot meals (healthy choice variety and Latina, and no pork options), lunches (regular and no fish), bread/roll and butter, and drinks: water, juice or milk. In my area if you have a pet, they offer pet food 1x a month. Also you can request a weeks worth of meals or daily delivery.
The only requirement to be in the program is to be over the age of 60. The only exception is for disabled veterans of any age.
MOW uses volunteers to deliver the meals to MOW customers who purchase the meals. This keeps MOW customers costs down (many who live on a fixed incomes.) It is a nice way for volunteers to help others around 4 hours a month or MORE.
